Today it’s raining, tomorrow it’s sunny

Thursday June 13 was my first day to see a bit of Recife and to visit the Arena Pernambuco a first time. The area where I am staying is called Piedada, close to Boa Viagem, the tourist area in Recife. When I walk out of the house it takes me 5 minutes to get to the beach. On my first sightseeing I saw anything possible. Streets full of cars and busses, but also a lot of water. It rained all day. Not just a few drops, no real heavy rainfalls. Just a few 100 meters from my place there are no real streets anymore, and during such rainfalls there were small rivers and lakes in between the houses. But the people from Recife knew what happens here; it rains one day, and the next day it will be sunny. And so it was, Friday was sunny and hot. By the way, on the streets U also see dogs, pigs and horses!

Ronaldo took me to the train station “Prazeres”, from which I could go for 1.6 Real to Joana Bezerra. From there I proceeded, also by train to Rodoviaria, which is by bus about 10 minutes from the Arena. Upon arrival at the Arena I went for my accreditation (with a name change of course…Hubertus instead of Bert…), got my uniform and I shortly visited the Media Centre (SMC), the place to work for the next 10 days. Around and in the Arena there was still a lot of construction work going on. Difficult to imagine that there will be a game in this Arena on sunday... On my way home I made a walk from the metro station through my area, getting a bit a feeling where I am and what is around over here. Still totally tired from my travel I went to bed quite early.

Friday morning shortly before 7am I was waiting for a bus to get to the “Prazeres”. Finally, after 25 minutes, a bus turned up. I don’t wanna bother U with the quality of this bus and it’s driver…but it was not really good..

Ilana joined me to the Arena (thanks!), and after having stated my presence I went for my first shift to the Media Centre. I was allocated to work at the Welcome Desk. Work…be present, don’t think I saw 1 journalist.

Lunch is served in the volunteer centre, a centre which is well equipped and quite a difference to my experiences from South Africa. After lunch we had a meeting with 2 FMO (FIFA Media Officers), out of which we got some imagination about the Media work. And we got a “real” job. Some of us went to rehearse in the Arena, I got allocated to a group who is going to do the support at the Media tribune. As our first job we were asked to organize the tickets for the Media people. Quite a job which took us all afternoon ;-)

I got in contact with quite some volunteer colleagues, next to Ilana a.o. with Catarina, Sérgio, Gecy, Andréa, Williamson, Lucas, Marcelo, Ana Laura, Raquel, Otho, Anne, Hugo, Bruno, André, Erivaldo, Larissa, Nievuska, Claudio, Ana Patricia, Maria, Carolina, Camilla and Izabelle.

At the end of my shift, Sérgio offered to take me to the train station at the airport, at which I agreed to meet with Ronaldo. It took us more than 2 hours for a distance of maybe 14 km…. Due to a strike of the busdrivers almost all roads and highways in and around Recife were full of traffic jam.

After Ronaldo finished his basketball game we went to the market, Feria Boa Viagem, a nice and interesting place with lot of good people around. Boa Viagem is an area with many hotels, flats, more or less good roads. Contradictionary to the houses U see out of the train on Ur way to the Arena. The end of my first “working day” at Recife!

Montag, 10. Juni 2013

Recife is "only" a few hours away...

It's mondayevening, June 10, and I am still at home in Switzerland. All local volunteers have completed a big part of their trainings. Several volunteers are already at work, like our friends in the Accreditation centre, the volunteers at the Airport or also those who take care of the protocol activities. Like my dutch friend Peter. He arrived last friday in Recife and he has already made his first experiences with "working at the Confederations Cup" ;-).

Wednesdaymorning, June 12, my flight will leave from Zürich (Switzerland), to Lissabon for a first stop. From there I will be heading to Fortaleza, entering Brazil somewhat north of Recife. Wednesdayevening at 22:24hrs (Brazilian time (03:24 European/South African time)) I will arrive at the airport in Recife, after 19 hours of travelling.

Happily Ronaldo will pick me up at the airport to take me to his place in Boa Viagem where I will stay until monday June 24. I am very much looking forward to meet Ronaldo, and also to meet many new volunteer friends in Recife, some of which I only know through one of the Facebook groups. I am wondering whether there are any South Africans in Recife..? Does anybody know?

Thursdaymorning I will try to find my way to the Arena Pernambuco. Thiago was so kind to send me following map and instructions to get from Boa Viagem to my workplace for the coming 2 weeks. This look as follows (might also be of use to any other volunteers):

Ok Bert! I'll try to help U. I hope you understand the map.
First of all, the stations more close for you in Boa Viagem is Aeroporto and Tancredo Neves stations. The train it's the only way to arrive at Arena Pernambuco.

When you arrive in Joana Bezerra Station, you have to take other train with final destination (Camaragibe), because exist other train with other destination (Jaboatão).
The trains always interleave, example: First train (Jaboatão), second train (Camaragibe) third train (Jaboatão) fourth train (Camaragibe) .....

Pay attention or you can take the wrong train.
Arriving in Rodoviaria station, U take the bus (TI. TIP/Parque Capibaribe).

If U need some help, it's complicate, because it's hard find someone that speak english there (I don't know if the government will put someone bilingual).
When U take this bus, certainly the bus driver don't speak english. Soooo... I hope when you say "Pernambuco Arena" he understands that U wants arrive there.

I really should have learned Portuguese.....

FIFA Volunteers for Brasil

Over 130 thousand people applied for the FIFA Volunteer Programme
Representatives from 147 countries showed interest in working in the Confederations Cup and the World Cup in 2014

On 24.09.2012, FIFA published the final numbers of the application process for those interested in working as volunteers at the 2014 World Cup, the 2013 Confederations Cup and the two draws that will establish the groups in both competitions. The total number of applicants reached 130,919.

The initial goal was reached after only eight days, when the Local Organising Committee (LOC) had registered 90 thousand applicants in the Volunteer Programme. However, applications remained open for a month, giving those interested - from different backgrounds - the opportunity to apply.

The 130,919 applications represent a significant record. In the 2006 World Cup in Germany, 48 thousand people applied; in South Africa in 2010, there were 70 thousand applications. From the total of those interested, 97% want to work at the FIFA World Cup and 76% at the Confederations Cup.

In addition to Brazilians from the 26 states and the Federal District, there are 7,450 applications from other countries. Spanish speaking countries are in the top four positions: Colombia (908), Argentina (509), Spain (504) and Mexico (500).

“In addition to the cultural exchange that characterises volunteer work in major sporting events, the participation of foreigners ensures that there will be volunteers for areas that need people who speak other languages, such as the competitions and the press”, explained the LOC’s Volunteer Programme Director Rodrigo Hermida.

Seven thousand volunteers are expected to work at the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2013 and 15 thousand in the 2014 World Cup. The Local Organising Committee will start to get in touch with candidates who have applied to work in the FIFA Confederations Cup in November 2012. For the World Cup, the contact will be made in November 2013.

The volunteer work in not paid, but LOC and FIFA will make uniforms available to those selected, allowance to assist in the commute to the place of activities (within the host city) and food during working hours. Candidates need to meet some requirements, such as being at least eighteen years of age and be available for at least twenty consecutive days during the events. Each shift lasts up to 10 hours. During the selection process the skills, profile and knowledge of each candidate will be verified.

Recife

Recife (Portuguese pronunciation: heh-see-fee) is the fifth-largest metropolitan area in Brazil with 3,743,854 inhabitants, the largest metropolitan area of the North/Northeast Regions, the 5th-largest metropolitan influence area in Brazil, and the capital and largest city of the state of Pernambuco. The population of the city proper was 1,555,039 in 2012.
Recife is located where the Beberibe River meets the Capibaribe River to flow into the Atlantic Ocean. It is a major port on the Atlantic Ocean. Its name is an allusion to the coral reefs that are present by the city's shores. The many rivers, small islands and over 50 bridges found in Recife city center characterize its geography and gives it the moniker of the "Brazilian Venice."
The Metropolitan Region of Recife is the main industrial zone of the State of Pernambuco; most relevant products are those derived from cane (sugar and ethanol), electronics, food, and others; thanks to the fiscal incentives of government, many industrial enterprises were started in the 1970s and 1980s. Recife has a tradition of being the most important commercial center of the North/Northeastern region of Brazil with more than 52,500 business enterprises in Recife itself plus 32,500 in the Metro Area which totals more than 85,000.
A combination of a large supply of labor and significant private investments turned Recife into Brazil's second largest medical center (second only to São Paulo); modern hospitals with state-of-the-art equipment receive patients from several neighboring States. Like all other cities in the Northeast, Recife is developing its tourist sector. The beach of Porto de Galinhas, 60 kilometers (37 mi) south of the city, has been repeatedly awarded the title of best beach in Brazil and has drawn many tourists. Recife's infrastructure is among the most developed in Brazil for travellers and business people, though there is wide room for improvement.
The city is also a renowned educational center, and home to the Federal University of Pernambuco, the largest university in Pernambuco. Several Brazilian historical figures, such as the poet and abolitionist Castro Alves, moved to Recife to attain their education.
Together with Natal these are the only Brazilian cities with direct flights to the islands of Fernando de Noronha, World Heritage Site since 2001.

Recife
